The maelstrom was a great read especially after the sludge that was the first two books though the maelstrom did have its own fair share of problems. The second book did pick up the pace and introduce us to some characters.

One point of issue with this is Scathach. While I by no means am a expert on the mythology isn't Scatthach a goddess like Artemis and a eternal maiden? Max's powers seem like a complete Deus Ex Machina. The elder vyes getting more attention and an introduction was intresting The maelstrom was a great read especially after the sludge that was the first two books though the maelstrom did have its own fair share of problems.

The elder vyes getting more attention and an introduction was intresting though I do feel like they were just there to pad Rowan's armies.

The fact that Henry H Neff decided to introduce wyrms and dragons but had them have little to no use was dissapointing.

Elias Bram's death was very anticlimatic put his hand in box someone does switchero and he dies in box and we get a scence of Astraoth hugging him. The greatest wizard known to man dead by a hug in Tarturus.

And the summoning needed to do this was a new concept introduced mere pages after which I don't really like. The Fomorian was also not a very good addition for my two cents. What are we gonna do a giant wall. I know lets summon our big huge god cyclops friend to bash it down no just no. The fact that they left Prusias alive I didn't really understand though after reading the other book set years later the terms they gave him were not well thought out. This book took me a while to find but I do love it for all its faults.

The epilogue and flash backs to Max in the Sidh were great though but Scathach scarring someone for such a petty reason as that some brought the latest gossip to her attention is stupid. When another shield maiden brought up the fact that Max is Lugh's son Scathach shrugs it off as doing what you gotta do which I still find stupid. The fact that Prusias is fine to sit inside and watch while his army fights and one of their biggest advantages is nullified gets on my nerves.

He is a Big Red Dragon for the love of god and while I know that Max is gonna win anyway because he is a demigod or whatnot the fact that Prusias doesnt fight makes no sense.

Astraoth sacrificing the world to "starving gods" I dont understand. I am pretty sure that they ate a universe so how would Earth sustain them for Eons? The huge demon tornado was also resolved in a pretty unsatisfactory way.

She was pulled into a portal because she was guided there by a green stone as a last ditch left destruct attempt. Astraoth's whole charachter is pretty grating. He has the book of Thoth damn it. You may not be able to kill David and his family or Max but you can damn well force everyone else to comply.

The part about him not wanting servant but rather followers doesnt make sense much to someone in a war. While it may be well and nice enough when they are literally no threat at all like in Second Siege but they had more allies and Astraoth shouldve just killed everyone.

The part about Max leaving the world because he was hit by a magic knife and having to keep a magic bandade was laughable at best mind numbing at worst. David being a half demon was a pretty meaningless twist all in all. Loved the book was a fun read but some character reasoning was down right dumb to me.

Jan 21, Aelvana rated it it was amazing. Having successfully defended Rowan from Prusias, the alliance is now ready to go on the offensive. Worse, the victory must come at the place that is the seat of his power.

And always, in addition to Prusais's menace, David, Max, and Mina must grapple with the mysterious Astaroth before his plans can come to fruition. I can't think of a more perfect cap to this startling and excellent series. Max, the Hound of R Having successfully defended Rowan from Prusias, the alliance is now ready to go on the offensive. Max, the Hound of Rowan, the son of the Celtic sun-god Lugh, is still discovering what his heritage means. Pursued by ruthless assassins that are actually his own clones, discovering new aspects to his power, and faced with impossible decisions, he may be Rowan's great savior.

David and Mia similarly uncover new depths of character, but my favorite has always been Max. Demigods that actually portray some fragment of the vastness and horror that an actual god might possess are rare in fiction, and Max has the unique challenge of integrating his humanity into his divinity, lest he become something worse than Prusias. And that warning is accurate. I do wish I had reread the previous books before this one, because the story is both vast and sweeping as well as close, tying up a lot of the little hints and threads from previous books, allowing most everyone who survived this far to have their own little piece of the story Bob and Mum are particularly touching.

Connor surprised me, more than once. So did the vyes. The emotional highs and lows struck all the right notes, and there's plenty of action and intrigue to move things along. This has been a long journey that changed drastically along the way. From the humble beginnings of a boy attending a magical school, to the world-altering disaster that followed, to the covert rebellions, then open war, then beyond, this has been an absolutely amazing ride and cemented its place among the best of the best.

Read them all in order preferably in a row to better appreciate the little clues and subtle details. I can't wait to see what Henry H. Neff writes in the future. I rate this book Highly Recommended. Jan 13, Mark Buxton rated it it was amazing. My name is David Menlo, and Rowan's fleet of confiscated ships is headed for a showdown with the Demon Prusias. Max was sent to find help for Rowan's forces, and I hope my best friend is still well.

He's suffered many severe injuries in the past, but it seems only a matter of time before he's inflicted with mortal wounds.

Rumors say Prusias now has another secret weapon to penetrate our defenses, and I wish I knew more. Little Mina's powers saved us last time, but she's being held back to defend My name is David Menlo, and Rowan's fleet of confiscated ships is headed for a showdown with the Demon Prusias. Little Mina's powers saved us last time, but she's being held back to defend Rowan itself. I've been given new responsibilities, however I don't know if I'll be able to fulfill the duties.

Many people already question my loyalties, but I'm not sure even my friends will understand and accept the secret I've been keeping. And through all of these problems, Astaroth is waiting to pounce on the survivors.

You must read the whole series in order, or you won't fully understand what was happening in this book. Also, most of the main characters are now in their upper teens. Although I've enjoyed the overall series, I must admit some parts of this book were a bit slow for me.

The plot described the brewing war as both sides prepared, but this preparation made some events drag along. I understand why the author did it, but I didn't always like it. However, the final showdown of good versus evil was worth the wait. Max spent much of his time recruiting allies, while the clone assassins hunted him down.

His unique healing ability allowed him to survive numerous lethal injuries in the past, and that trend continued. Since the beginning of the series, a power within Max has been struggling to erupt.
